Almost a month ago, a Mauritanian citizen, Roughaya Abeidi (31) was arrested by the police after draining a credit card shopping belonging to British student Holly Jemima Hartley (22).
The incident began back on Monday (10/21) at around 11 pm as Hartley was checking into a hostel in the Seminyak area, the Ala Hostel on Jalan Drupadi, Basangkasa, and put her carrying bag containing a wallet and other valuable cards in the room which was shared with four other travelers.
“Not long after the young woman went out for a walk with her friend to the beach she was contacted by her father back in the UK who had received information from the bank that there were large transactions being charged to her credit card. The credit card was used 13 times for a total of 22,765.42 pounds or around Rp 415 million,” Detective I Putu Ika Prabawa from Kuta Polsek told reporters on Monday (11/18/2019).
After receiving the news, the victim checked her bag in the room and realized that her credit card and English license were missing. The victim then reported the incident to the Kuta Police.
“Armed with a print out of the bank transactions given by the victim, the Kuta Police operational team immediately drove to one of the transaction locations, namely at Yulia Jewelry, Mall Bali Galeria (MGB), where witnesses admitted that there were indeed transactions made by two women (allegedly a foreigner and Indonesian) which was also captured by CCTV footage,” explained Ika.
According to the transaction print out, the two women were shopping for sports shoes, cellphones and jewelry.
Police ascertained that the two women were living in a villa in the Legian area and found Abeidi at the Vila De Bale, Legian. (It wasn’t stated whether that villa bill was also on the card. ED)
“During the initial interrogation of the woman she admitted that she had made several transactions at MBG. She also claimed that it was the first time she had stolen and found the credit card by the side of the road,” the detective said.
Ika added that there was one Indonesian citizen who along with the perpetrators was questioned as a witness. From Abeidi the police secured a set of gold necklaces, earrings, eardrop rings, a pair of shoes, a British driver’s license, and receipts from a gold and shoe store.
Abeidi was charged with article 362 of the Criminal Code.
